Mia Hagues is the Chair of Nottingham City of Literature’s Youth Advisory Board. Currently on a gap year before starting her degree in English at the University of St Andrews, Mia is deeply interested in the governance behind charities and advocates for young people at Nottingham City of Literature’s Trustee Board meetings.
Having been attending Speak Easy since 2022, she saw the lack of creative opportunities in her own town and founded the Right to Write Collective in 2024, through which she ran poetry workshops in secondary schools. She is now the Assistant Producer of the bimonthly ‘Young Performer’s Open Mic Nights’ at Mansfield Museum, and has facilitated workshops for Mansfield Cultural Services and Nottingham Poetry Festival.
As both a reader and a writer, Mia is commonly found reading proto-feminist literature or scribbling down a poem about nature. Her poem ‘A Different Harrying’ was named Runner Up in the teens category of the Ashdown Forest Poetry Competition 2025.
Through the Youth Advisory Board, Mia hopes to broaden creative opportunities for young people both in and around the city, believing that cities of literature should expand beyond city-centric programming. As part of this, she is the Project Lead for the Talking Cities Project, connecting 75 young people from 15 cities of literature around the world through letters!
