About this event

Join the Poet Laureate in his writing shed for live online conversation, poetry reading and audience Q&A. Simon Armitage will discuss public engagement as a poet and read some of the many poems he’s written for standalone projects, commissions and collaborations. Recently collected in Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic (Faber), this work represents the nature and scale of his poetry and covers an eclectic array of subjects including sculpture, the environment, travel, drama, and media. There will be a Q&A with Simon after the reading.

Simon Armitage’s numerous accolades include the 2018 Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and an Ivor Novello Award for song-writing in the BAFTA-winning film Feltham Sings. He has published over a dozen collections of poetry, including his acclaimed translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. He is also the author of three non-fiction bestsellers All Points North, Walking Home and Walking Away. In May 2020, his new band Land Yacht Regatta (LYR) recorded his poem Lockdown as a track featuring Florence Pugh in aid of the charity Refuge. Simon Armitage was elected Oxford Professor of Poetry (2015-2019) and is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds.

Tickets: £5 for entry to Zoom event and opportunity to take part in Q&A
or £15 to include entry to the event as above plus a paperback copy (cover price £10.99) of Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic supplied and delivered post-free to UK addresses by Five Leaves Independent bookshop. A limited number of the books will include a Faber bookplate signed by Simon Armitage; you will be able to select this option at the time of booking, for as long as they are available; thereafter the same ticket + book offer remains for unsigned books.

This event will take place on Zoom Webinars. Full details will be sent to ticket-holders on booking. Please note this event will not be recorded.
