Dark Summer presents an afternoon of workshops on horror and dark fiction, looking at this exciting and thriving genre from a host of angles. The day will be presented by horror author, reviewer and lecturer Alex Davis, who will be joined by special guest Sarah Ward, an acclaimed crime author whose Gothic novel The Quickening is released in August 2020 under the name of Rhiannon Ward.

Day schedule:

1:00pm-1:10pm: Introduction and Event Welcome

1:10pm-2:10pm: Opening workshop with Alex Davis

All-Encompassing Horror – Using the Five Senses

2:10pm-2:30pm: Break

2:30-3:30pm – Guest Workshop with Sarah/Rhiannon Ward

Setting and Atmosphere in Dark Fiction

3:30pm-3:50pm: Break

3:50pm-4:50pm: Closing workshop with Alex Davis

Blood and Guts – Portraying Violence in Horror

4:50pm-5:00pm: Plenary/closing questions

Throughout this workshop, you will...
Engender a further understanding of a number of areas of horror and dark fiction, including atmosphere, description, physicality and more.
Establish good examples of these elements in horror and dark fiction
Develop fresh ideas for genre fiction stories
About Alex Davis and Sarah Ward
Alex Davis is an author, lecturer and reviewer with a keen interest in horror. He works as Associate Lecturer for the University of Derby, and has had many horror short stories published over the years, as well as a host of reviews and criticism, including the popular Film Gutter series. Alex is also known as the organiser of the popular Edge-Lit event, taking place each year in Derby.

Sarah Ward is the author of four DC Childs novels set in the Derbyshire Peak District where she lives. Sarah was a 2015 Amazon Rising Star, A Patient Fury was The Observer's Thriller of the Month in 2017 and The Shrouded Path an Amazon kindle top ten bestseller. Her new gothic thriller, The Quickening, written under the name of Rhiannon Ward is out on the 20th August.

This workshop will be delivered online via Zoom. Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service you can use to virtually meet with others - either by video or audio-only or both. A user manual containing access instructions and a link will be sent out to you before the workshop. You will need an internet connection, and a computer with either a built in camera or webcam, and a built-in microphone/speaker.

Please note: You'll be able to pause video and audio while you take your breaks, or you can choose to stay and chat with your fellow participants.
