About this event

What can be more important for an author than creating the perfect ending to a novel? And yet, many writers wrestle at one time or another with honing that big finish. Even if your beginning and middle is pitch perfect, a weak final act will disappoint the reader. A strong ending will have them hungry for more. A solid ending has its own considerations, which should be observed right from page one. In this course, we look at arcs, pay-offs, cliff-hangers, twists as well as tips to bear in mind before penning those beautiful words: The End.

The online workshop will include a PowerPoint presentation, group activities and some simple practice. Be prepared to write and participants are welcome to bring in their own projects to work on. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and Ian is happy to give feedback on your work, time permitting.

By the end of the workshop, you will:
Understand narrative arcs.
Understand character arcs.
Recognise the value of rising conflict and threat.
Build an awareness of pace and momentum.
Avoid ‘magic wands’ and other pitfalls.
Recognise types of endings.
Build confidence with one’s own writing.
