Andy Barrett

Andy Barrett is a playwright and artistic director of the community theatre company Excavate.

About Andy

Andy is regularly commissioned by the Nottingham Playhouse, his most recent show Tony’s Last Tape, based on the diaries of Tony Benn, completed a national tour with a performance at the House of Commons. 

Dolly a cloning meets country and western musical, was chosen by The Times in their top five plays of 2010, and The Allotment (both written for New Perspectives) was shortlisted for the Edinburgh Festival Amnesty International Award.  

He often works collaboratively, creating shows in partnership with the Sichuan Opera Troupe of Chengdu and the National Theatre of Kosovo. 

His research and reflections on writing community based theatre, having written around fifty such shows, are read worldwide. His radio work includes plays, adaptations and a Sony Award winning series Lily's Years. His adaptation of Ibsen's The League of Youth is published by Nick Hern Books.
