OPPORTUNITY: Get involved with Story Valley!

Phoebe Stafford
Fri 30 Apr, 2021

We are looking for teachers, language enthusiasts, creatives, and/or people who work with refugees and asylum seekers to get involved in our brand new project, Story Valley, which launches in July 2021.

What is Story Valley?

Story Valley is a creative language and literacy project facilitated by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network that encourages the sharing of stories and breaking down barriers between cultures. Story Valley is designed to enable students to explore literature written in languages other than English, develop creative literacy skills, and meet exceptional writers from Europe and beyond. The objectives of the project are to stimulate students to read, write, and speak in different languages and to use their creativity to translate oral history so that they can strengthen their literacy and language skills in a natural, non-formal way.

If that all sounds interesting to you, we’d love for you to get involved! Keep reading to find out how.

Teachers, refugee and asylum seeker workers and volunteers, language enthusiasts:

If you have experience working on creative projects with language students, particularly with those from refugee and migrant backgrounds, we’d love to hear from you and talk about working together on Story Valley.

Just fill in our Interest Form and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

Share your writing (open to all):

We’re inviting you to submit a piece of creative writing (in any form including poetry, short stories, letters, etc.) of no more than 500 words, inspired by Story Valley, for a chance to be featured on our website and at the Story Valley launch event this summer. As a thank you for your submission, you will also receive a Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature goody bag.

Your writing could focus on any of the following themes:

  • Migration and displacement
  • Multilingualism, mother languages, and language learning
  • Creative expression
  • Exploring different cultures
  • Citizenship, inclusion, and the feeling of ‘belonging’

Please send your submission as a Microsoft Word document to phoebe@nottmcityoflit.org with the subject ‘STORY VALLEY WRITING SUBMISSION [YOUR NAME]’. Make sure to include your full name, age, and contact information.
