Library Week Special: City Libraries

John Baird
Mon 9 Oct, 2017

It's National Libraries Week, so to celebrate we're highlighting a different local library / library provider each day throughout. We start off with - what else? - Angel Row and its City cousins. Tomorrow, we look at the wider county....

Nottingham’s City Libraries

At last count there are thirteen Nottingham City Libraries. Whilst they continue to provide that all-important service of offering free books, all of our city libraries offer more besides. Apart from the other free ways of accessing text - of which daily newspapers are available and E-books can be downloaded - the libraries have become important sources of free, unlimited computer use and WiFi access. Other popular services include their role in researching family history, children’s groups, and help in self-improvement and finding work.

Since 2010 several city libraries have closed, only to find a new home within a larger Joint Service Centre. These new centres house other facilities such as meeting rooms, information desks, IT areas, job centres, cafés and health centres. The latest of these centres is being built on the site of the old Strelley Road Library, and is due to open in Autumn 2018.

Nottingham residents remain entitled to a library card from the day we are born, and our libraries are both free to join and borrow books from. Here’s a quick guide to what else they offer:

Groups here include Tangled yarns, Crime Readers’ Group, Reading for Pleasure group, Reading for Mental Health Group, Microfilm and Microfiche readers. They stock books in a wide range of Community languages - from Amharic to Welsh.
