Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886) was an American poet whose prolific output was only discovered after her death; during her lifetime, she published fewer than a dozen poems, and these had been edited to conform to contemporary poetry ‘norms’. Her work was unique and unconventional and many of her poems (and indeed her correspondence) were concerned with themes around death and immortality. She was famously reclusive.
