Nottingham City of Literature
Mon 4 Apr, 2022

Are you a writer or poet with knowledge of languages beyond English? Are you interested in working with young people to explore themes of language, identity and cultural heritage through creative writing? We're looking for a workshop facilitator for our multilingual creative writing workshops.

Are you a writer or poet with knowledge of languages beyond English? Are you interested in working with young people to explore themes of language, identity and cultural heritage through creative writing?

Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature is looking for someone to facilitate a series of four creative writing workshops for young people aged 16-24 to take place in Summer 2022. Exact dates and times of the workshops are yet to be confirmed, but workshops will most likely be held weekly on a weekday evening, and will be 90 minutes in length. In these workshops, we want to celebrate the linguistic diversity of Nottingham and provide an opportunity for participants to use their languages in creative ways.

The aims of the workshops also align closely with the themes explored on the ERASMUS-funded Story Valley project that Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature is a partner on. Story Valley is a creative language and literacy project facilitated by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network that encourages the sharing of stories and breaking down barriers between cultures. Story Valley is designed to enable students to explore multilingualism and develop creative literacy skills. The objectives of the project are to stimulate students to read, write, and speak in different languages and to use their creativity to translate oral history so that they can strengthen their literacy and language skills in a natural, non-formal way. The global aspect of the project is particularly important as Nottingham is working together with Ljubljana (Slovenia), Leeuwarden (Netherlands), and Edinburgh (Scotland).

To celebrate Story Valley in Nottingham, we plan to host a series of four workshops for young, multilingual people in Nottingham (aged 16-24 years old) which celebrate linguistic diversity and provides a space to share cultures, stories, and languages while turning these into creative writing outputs.

We are looking for a writer with a passion for languages and working with young creatives to facilitate the workshops. The fee for this role is £800 for the whole project. Please be aware that this is a freelance post, and you are responsible for your own tax and National insurance contributions relating to this commission.

The successful applicant should have:

  • A proven track record of facilitating creative writing workshops with community groups and young people
  • Knowledge of languages other than English and experience of writing in languages other than English
  • Sensitivity towards the needs of writers writing in languages other than English
  • An up to date DBS Check and public liability insurance.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please send us an e-mail with your Creative CV and an application letter detailing how you might structure a creative writing workshop for this project to phoebe@nottmcityoflit.org by Sunday 17th April at 5pm.
