About Helen

I am Deputy Director of Finance at the University of Nottingham. An important part of my role is supporting the University to develop and achieve its strategy by making sure that the University get best value out of every penny that it spends. I love my job as it enables me to work with lots of different people, all dedicated to making the world a better place through learning, scholarship and discovery. Nottingham is my adopted city and I have lived here since I was 18. I’m really passionate about being able to make a difference in the City, both through my work at the University and my involvement in NUCoL.

Why I read:

I have always loved reading but have found physical books to be a particular escape during lockdown as I spent most of my days looking at a computer screen! I have rediscovered my local library and have recently been experimenting with a wide variety of books – classics, thrillers, historical fiction, biographies. I’m a fan of a great story: I have read both The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt multiple times. However, my favourite genre is spy fiction – particularly John Le Carre. My favourite books by Le Carre are Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, closely followed by A Perfect Spy.

Interesting fact:

The reason that I did my degree (German) was because I wanted to be a spy. I made a better accountant.
