Prior to this, she was Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Arts, Design and Humanities at De Montfort University. Barbara spent six years at Arts Council England where she held the posts of Director, Theatre and Interim Executive Director, Arts with responsibility for policy and strategy development.
She has a wide practical experience of the artistic and business aspects of the creative and cultural industries – particularly in the performing arts. Before joining Arts Council England she spent time in consultancy, ran training courses and worked with several organisations for NESTA.
Barbara was Executive Director of the Royal Court Theatre and earlier in her career produced the work of Cheek by Jowl worldwide. She also has experience of producing theatre in the West End and festival programming.
In 1993 she was honoured with an MBE for services to the arts.
In my teens Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard was my introduction to contemporary theatre. It lit a passion that resulted in me working in the theatre industry for many years.
