Two books changed my life. One was at 14 returning from the library and starting to read Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible and staying on the 59 bus until I finished it. The other is the life-changing Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, given to me by a London spiv, and that twenty years later I had the joy of adapting for the stage. The stories that first cast their spell on me were of the great trickster Brer Rabbit.
